There aren’t very many things that are more frustrating when you’re driving than not being able to see where you’re going. Having a windshield that’s full of streaks can make it almost impossible to see where you’re headed, especially when you’re traveling into the sun. You might be surprised to know that your wiper blades can sometimes be responsible for those streaks. If you’ve been meticulously cleaning your windshield, only to find that it’s still full of streaks every time you try to drive, it’s probably because the blades are causing the problem. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to keep your windshield free of streaks so you can actually see where you’re going.
Clean it Thoroughly
The first step in having a windshield that isn’t smeared with streaks is to clean it thoroughly, inside and outside. You want to use a cleaner that is made specifically for glass. Also, make sure you choose one that is designed to minimize streaks. Some are better at this than others, so it’s important to be careful when you choose your windshield cleaner. As a general rule of thumb, you want to choose something that’s not out of the bargain bin at your local store.
Most of the time, windshield cleaner that’s inexpensive is not going to get the job done. In addition, it’s important that you use something to clean the windshield that isn’t going to add to the problem. A good terrycloth or microfiber towel is your best solution. Make sure the towel is clean and that you haven’t used it to clean anything else as you don’t want it to have any residue on it. Take it slow and do not rush through the cleaning process. Instead, make sure that you go over each area carefully. If necessary, clean everything once, get a clean towel and do it again.
Use Windshield Wipers That Are Well-Maintained
It won’t do you any good to make sure that your windshield is free from streaks if your windshield wipers are so old that the minute you turn them on, you have a bunch of dirt and debris that’s dragged right back across it.
This can happen with blades that have been on your vehicle too long or when your car has spent a lot of time out in the sun, causing the blades to become cracked and hard. If they’re not whisking the water off of your windshield, it’s time to replace them. The same is true if you’re getting streaks in a certain spot every time you turn on your wipers.
The last thing you want is to need them and have them fail to function properly. It’s a good idea to make sure that this is something you take care of on a regular basis. For some reason, a lot of people have the habit of not paying any attention to their windshield wipers until they suddenly need them and this doesn’t usually turn out very well. Next to your tires, the blades on your windshield wipers are one of the most important things that you have on your car.
Sometimes, there are certain things that make it more difficult to keep the streaks off your windshield. A perfect example is smoking inside the car. All of that smoke has to go somewhere. Even if you crack the windows, there’s a heavy residue that ends up on the inside of the windows. This can cause a lot of streaks on your windshield, and it’s notoriously difficult to get off. Therefore, if you smoke in the car, it’s imperative that you clean the windshield more frequently than you otherwise would. You might say the same is true if you live in an area that’s incredibly dusty. Anybody that lives on a dirt road knows how quickly their car gets dirty. The thing is, it doesn’t just get dirty on the outside.
Even when the windows are rolled up all the time, that dirt somehow has a way of getting inside. Before you know it, there’s a fine coating of it all over everything, including the windows. In other words, it means that you’re going to have to clean your car more often and do a more thorough job of it each time.
Getting the streaks off your windshield can be frustrating, but it doesn’t have to be impossible. If you use the right cleaner and you carefully and methodically clean the windshield, you can get it done. Pay close attention to your windshield wipers and replace them at the first sign of a problem. That way, you’ll be able to see better and drive safer.
